“To find the minds construction in the face. He was a gentleman on I built? An absolute trust.”(I.IV.27)
In this quote above, in the book Macbeth by Shakespeare, we are presented King Duncan. In this quotation we can see how the king is a noble man. In the beginning of the play we are exposed to the fact that war had just taken place in Scotland, and King Duncan was betrayed by one of his Thanes. Duncan sentence the thane of Cawdor to death, and even thought the king is mad and betrayed he still respects the dead man, not allowing his sons to mock. He respected the former thane of Cawdor and held a great amount of trust towards the thane. Furthermore this quote teaches us how the King is a respectable man and how noble of him to even after being betrayed he respects the man that betrayed him. King Duncan is also a very good king, he fights for his country and its safety “Ant to conclude/ The victory fell on us.”(I.III.13). I believe it to be his motivation, the safety of his kingdom and people.

In the first act the King plays a very important role, one of his acts changed the story. When Macbeth was told by the witches he would be thane of Cawdor he did not believe until the king named him the new thane.
“No more the thane of Cawdor shall deceive/ Our bosom interest. Go pronounce his present death./ And with his former title greet Macbeth.” (I.III.13)
. If the king had never named Macbeth the new thane the story would have been very different. But the King named Macbeth because he new how loyal Macbeth was and how heroic he was during war times. “Only I have to say,/ More is thy due than more than all I can pay.”(I.IV.27)
“I have began to plant thee and will labor/ To make thee full of growing.”(I.IV.27). Duncan trust Macbeth and adores him. In these quotes we see the King’s love towards Macbeth. And we also see how Duncan will help Macbeth grow to be his most trusted man. But this love does not seem to be responded, although Macbeth respects the king and worships him, there’s a desire in Macbeth to kill Duncan“If th’ assassination/ Could trammel up the consequences and catch/ With his surcease, that but this blow…”(I.VII.39)
What questions or confusions are raised by your character’s words, actions, etc.?

    Final thoughts
Duncan’s presence in this act is very important, because he choses Macbeth to be the next Thane of Cawdor, proving the prophecy of the witches to be true. Making Macbeth wonder and wish that Duncan would die, so then he would become king. But in this act we also see how the king is noble and loved by many, and at the same time he protects his people and country from other invaders.

Fe, good comments on Duncan’s character and use of evidence to support your analysis. (Better to write “play” than “book”; watch proof reading – you have several little errors.)

“What, sir, not yet at rest? The king’s a-bed.He hath been in unusual pleasure, and/Sent forth great largess to your offices. This diamond he greets your wife withal,/By the name of most kind hostess, and shut up In measureless content.”(II.I.49)
In this quote from Act two scene one, we are presented a conversation between Macbeth and Banquo. In this quotation from Banquo about Duncan, we learn that he is a very generous man and he treats his servants and noblemen with dignity. Recently Duncan and his sons and kinsmen, went to Macbeth estates and are celebrating their victory with a great feast. When Lady Macbeth appears, Duncan is pleased and immediately flatters her with compliment on how good of a host she is, we can confirm this because Banquo says the king has presented Lady Macbeth with a diamond by the name of the most kind hostess. Although in this quote Duncan gifts Lady Macbeth with a present, we also learn that Duncan is not usually in good mood and that he must be very content with his hostess and victory in order for him to be in such a good mood.

In the first act of the play we learned that King Duncan was a very good man and loyal to his men, he also played and important role in this following act, “II go, and it is done. The bell invites me./Hear it not, Duncan, for it is a knell. That summons thee to heaven or to hell.”(II.I.51). In the first act we learned that there was a prophecy that told Macbeth he would be king, and in this act, we learned that Macbeth has decided to murder the King in order to fulfill his prophecy. To the end of this act, Duncan is already dead, even though he died in this act, Duncan was very important to the adding of the story, because if he never decided to spent the nigh in Macbeth estates, the murder would never occur. And if Duncan had not been assassinated, Macbeth would not be king and the play would have a different outline.

“Outrun the pauser, reason. Here lay Duncan,/His silver skin laced with his golden blood,/And his gashed stabs looked like a breach in nature”(II.III.71). This is the last description we have about Duncan in this act, and perhaps for a long while. In this quote Macbeth describes Duncan as he laid there lifeless in his beds. We also see the immensity of his nobility as Macbeth refers to his blood as golden blood, something godly like, something divine. Throughout scene three, the servants that guarded his bedchamber were caused of murder, and for that Macbeth kills them, and he justifies this from his immense love for the king, and his anger for seeing the king dead Who can be wise, amazed, temp’rate, and furious,/Loyal and neutral, in a moment? No man.Th’ expedition of my violent love/Outrun the pauser, reason.”(II.III.71). He claims that he lost his reason for his immense love towards the king. We can also see this in the following sentences“…That had a heart to love, and in that heart/Courage to make ’s love known?”(II.III.71) Macbeth question who would have such courage to do such horrible deed, like killing their beloved king.
In conclusion in Duncan’s role in this act are very important, even though he is dead, we know that if he did not die, the story would have a different outline. And with his death we learn a lot about other characters like Macbeth, that claims to love the king with all his heart, and claim to have lost reason due to love for the king, when he killed the two servant. While we know that he was the murder. So Duncan’s death was very important to the story as a hole and as a way to develop the characters and the story itself.

    • How do we know that Duncan was not usually in a good mood? How does the gift he gives Lady Macbeth contribute to the idea of irony and disloyalty even more? This could have been interesting additions to your comment. Should have been more detailed in what we learn from Macbeth after the murder.
